When do chihuahua puppy ears go up. By the age of 8 to 12 weeks old, many puppies do have erect ears. Cropping Your Puppy’s Floppy Ears. Cropping, or having a vet surgically remove a portion of your puppy’s ears to make them stand up, is typically done when your puppy between 7 and 16 weeks of age. It’s not really a solution for older puppies with floppy ears, it’s more of a tradition for just a select few breeds. Your puppy's breeding is a good indicator of whether his ears will stand up. Dogs inherit the prick ear from their wolf ancestry, so you'll see standing ears on wolflike breeds with thick, double coats such as the Alaskan malamute, Samoyed, and Siberian husky.Primitive breeds such as the Mexican hairless, basenji, and pharaoh hound also have naturally standing ears and a sleek, short coat. When they do start to go up, they frequently don't go up at the same time. Their ears do all kinds of wonky things in the teething stage. The point is, when he/she is done teething, his/her ears will generally stand correctly. Each puppy is on his or her own time table, even puppies from the same litter. If your chi is full-grown and his ears flop over, it might be because he is mixed with another breed. "Chugs," for example, which are a chihuahua-pug mix, tend toward the crinkled folder ears commonly seen in pugs. "Chippits" — a pitbull-chihuahua mix that could grow up to 45 pounds — might have fold-over ears like a pitbull, even if they're shaped like triangular chi ears, per The Dog Digest.

Please don’t ever take a Chihuahua puppy away from their mother before this point. It’s hugely irresponsible and can lead to health and mental development issues for the puppy. Handy Hint: The ears are another interesting aspect to the Chihuahua’s puppy development. Typically the ears will stand up after 15 weeks, but not always. If your puppy is from a breed that you know can keep their ears up, but for whatever reason his aren’t doing that after 6 months, there is always the option of taping the ears. Actually, this can even work on breeds like the Doberman, which doesn’t typically have standing ears. Most of the time, the ears of a Chihuahua puppy will perk up and stand up straight after 5 to 15 weeks, and not always in sync. Most Chihuahua ears will stop being floppy once they have finished teething at the latest. However, some can even be as late as 8 months old when the ears go up. Why are my Chihuahua ears down and still floppy? Sometimes a chihuahua will have one or both ears suddenly droop when they start losing their baby teeth. My older chihuahua didn't do it, my younger one did, one day her right ear was flopped down. A month later, it popped back up and has stayed that way ever since.

Chihuahua ears can go up and down throughout the time they are teething. While your Chihuahua puppy is teething, do not be surprised if you see their ears droop. You may see the tip of one ear bend forward one day and then the other on the next day. This is quite normal. Just like a human baby will drool while they are teething, Chihuahua's.
