When Do Westie Puppy Ears Stand Up
ANSWER: Normally, your pup's ears will stand up within 8 - 12 weeks, although it may rarely take up to six months for the cartilage to become strong enough to hold the ears up. Several years ago we had a Westie whose ears did not stand until she was 6 months of age.
When do westie puppy ears stand up. Hi Archie, With GSD's if their ears aren't up by around 5 months you can use tape (elastoplast - must be very sticky). I wouldn't worry about it at the age your puppy is at the moment, don't forget he's probably teething too which, with GSD's, means their ears are up and down like yoyo's - also quite often floppy to one side or the other (very cute look actually). My westie was 10 weeks when his stood up. He is 6 months now. I had a westie for 15 years, her ears never did stand up. I didn't care I loved her just the way she was. I thought she looked cute. My other westies were 11 weeks and 10 weeks. I wouldn't worry I certainly would not tape them. That's silly as he is 14 weeks now. My Westie puppy is a little over 9 weeks old and both his ears are up. Sweetlolly11 says: Somewhere beween 2,5 and 3 months. Some raise them in 4 months, but after that if at least one ear isn't. If you have a terrier or any breed of dog with ears that always stand up, you can train the dog's ears to make them point downward instead. All you need are a few simple tips and you can keep your terrier's ears from standing up in no time. After a few weeks of training, your dog's ears should permanently stay in a downward position.
A vet in Brazil uses injections of Restylane into the pinna of the ear to help it stand up also. Most Yorkie show breeders will use a brown paper grocery bag and cut out an inner ear shape of the puppy's ear, and then eyelash glue it into the inside of the ear, changing it out every few days to help ears stand up. I've noticed recently that some of my blog traffic comes from folks searching Al Gore's Internet for information about Scottie ears and why they do or do not "stick up." So, today I'm letting you in on a little secret. Again. We gloriously handsome/beautiful Scotties aren't born with prickly-up ears. They're actually kind of cute… Hi, A Yorkshire Terrier's ears usualy stand up in their first 3 to 6 months of life. If they have not stood up after a year, it is possible they do not have the muscules to do so. This in itself isn't a problem. Many Yorkies can live happy and healthy lives with floppy ears. It might make an ever so slight difference in the weight his ears are carrying, which could let them stand up. It's not guaranteed, but worth a shot if you're really set on having a Westie with ears that stand up. Also, try to network with other Westie owners and see when their dogs' ears stood up.
Ears – Westies’ ears should stand up straight, and end in a point. They should be set midway on each side of the dog’s head, neither to close together or spaced too widely. The hair on a the ears should be short, and shouldn’t be cut or trimmed. Eyes – Westies should have wide set eyes of medium size, dark and set underneath heavy. Every puppy, even puppies from the same litter, will develop differently. Some German Shepherds may take up to seven months. If his ears do not stand up by the time he is 8 months old, they are probably never going to stand up because this is the time when most GSD's ears take permanent form. Your puppy's breeding is a good indicator of whether his ears will stand up. Dogs inherit the prick ear from their wolf ancestry, so you'll see standing ears on wolflike breeds with thick, double coats such as the Alaskan malamute, Samoyed, and Siberian husky.Primitive breeds such as the Mexican hairless, basenji, and pharaoh hound also have naturally standing ears and a sleek, short coat. Cropping Your Puppy’s Floppy Ears. Cropping, or having a vet surgically remove a portion of your puppy’s ears to make them stand up, is typically done when your puppy between 7 and 16 weeks of age. It’s not really a solution for older puppies with floppy ears, it’s more of a tradition for just a select few breeds.
At What Age Does A West Highland White Terriers Ears Prop Up? My pup is about six months old, and his ears haven’t propped up yet…does that mean they never will? I’ve read that they usually begin to prop up at about the fourth month, so that worries me because hes actually seven months old now that I think of it. I have a Westie puppy (born February 19, 2007). Her ears did not come up at 12 weeks, so I started taping them. I've taped them for two weeks (changing tape every other day). After removing the tape, they will stay up, but occasionally will droop down if the tape has been off - but then, they will pop back up. There's not a deadline as to when the ears come back up during teething, so don't hedge on before six month age. by Nans gsd on 02 September 2015 - 17:09 Not to worry; this is only the beginning of the growth spurts these GSD go thru; but really if it was up unless she injured it somehow, pretty sure it will come back up. Sometimes this happens. Yes to make sure the ears stand breeders will tape them, but this usually only works in puppy. What I am saying is, if your westie is just a pet, as most are and you were not going to show it doesn't matter Cross posted with @McKenzie
