Poodle puppies have wavy coats, which are also softer than that of the adult dog. While the coat changes over time, how long it takes depends on the size of the poodle. In toy and miniature poodles, the wavy coat starts changing into a curly coat at approximately 9 months of age, and takes about 9 months to completely transition.

When does toy poodle lose puppy hair. Once a poodle transitions out of its puppy coat, it develops a thick curly hair type that covers the entire dog from head to toe. This coat is non-shedding and hypoallergenic; while poodles are well-known for their lack of shedding, this also means that their curly coat needs constant maintenance to avoid matting. Puppies lose their puppy coats between 4-to-6 months of age, although this time frame varies widely from breed to breed and can start at 12 weeks or wait until they’re one year old. It is a hereditary disorder found in small poodle varieties and cold-weather breeds, like Pommeranians and malamutes. The syndrome causes hair loss along both sides of your dog's body, starting near the base of his tail. The balding continues up the spine as the disorder progresses, but it does not affect the head or front legs. Poodle fur is really hair – it is softer than most dogs’ fur and it grows continuously. Puppies have very soft hair that often grows in wavy instead of curly. Poodle hair transitions from puppy hair to adult Poodle hair somewhere between 9 and 18 months of age. Some Poodles don’t grow into their full adult coat until they reach three.

The poodles’ most defining physical characteristic is their curly, tightly wound fur. Their fur protects them against the cold, collects less dander -- making poodles more suitable for those with allergies -- and looks beautiful. Unfortunately, some conditions can cause your poodle to lose some of his wonderful locks.. Poodle won't "shed" it's puppy coat but will grow & grow & grow & you need to give your pup haircuts on a regular basis. The puppy coat will grow out & the adult coat will come int at the same time. Yes, Poodles shed. Like all animals with hair (including humans), sometimes a Poodle’s hair will fall out naturally or during grooming. This is normal. While all dog breeds shed, the Poodle does earn its reputation as a low shedding breed, as compared to heavy shedders such as the Golden Retriever and Alaskan Malamute. A Poodle does not have the plush double coat that many breeds have. Poodles have a single, dense coat of curled hair. Just like human hair, it grows and some hairs do fall out. When the hairs fall out of a Poodle's coat, they often fall back into the coat. Therefore, a Poodle does not shed in the traditional sense of canine shedding.

Puppy “Milk” Teeth. Your puppy’s first set of teeth are called Milk Teeth – so named because he begins teething while he is still nursing from his mother (at about 2-3 weeks). Milk Teeth appear in this order: Incisors – 12 total (6 upper and 6 lower) at about 2-3 weeks; Canines – 4 total (2 upper and 2 lower) at about 4 weeks Most puppies lose their puppy coat when they're somewhere around 3 - 10 months old, depending on size, breed and coat type. This sort of puppy hair loss can be more extreme in some breeds than others, Pomeranians are a prime example of this, and may look very 'patchy' for a time. Even if the poodle does "clear" from a darker color to a lighter one, the "clearing" of the coat is not uniform all over the poodle's fur. For instance, the fur around the ears and the thicker guard hairs tend to "hold" their color throughout the life of the poodle, even when other parts of the coat change to another color. Like women lose hair while pregnant, so does pregnant Poodles. When your Poodle is pregnant, you should expect hair loss. It is common thing for the hair to change its thickness and this is a normal process, which means that the normal and standard hair will return eventually.

Puppy clips or shorter cuts are popular for companion-type puppies or poodles. The breed sheds little to no hair and is great for allergy sufferers. You do need to trim their coat. Check your poodle’s ears for wax buildup and mites. Also, remove hair growing inside the ear canal. The teeth, too, require regular brushing. The nails can become. I have been reading online that it could take up to 2 years. I have a poodle thats 4 months and I am worrying about the curls. Because they are not there. I wasn't sure to claim this to the breeder or wait. I took her to get groomed and the groomer asked me if she was mixed. Thanks! Any source info would be greatly appreciated. If I should go back to the breeder and explain my case. You may notice adult hair beginning to come in much sooner. When my puppy was around 6 - 7 months I started noticing patches of much coarser, curlier hair. Right now she is about 50/50 soft-wavy puppy coat and coarse, curly adult coat. You will know your puppy is in coat change when her coat begins to mat practically overnight. In young puppies, their hair is soft and can vary between soft waves to pronounced curls. As the puppy grows, so does the time required for grooming. As the Standard Poodle puppy matures, he will go through a coat change. When this occurs varies from dog to dog, but it usually happens when the puppy is between 9 and 18 months.
